Coordinator Report into 2016 East Coast Low

Disaster coordination

During 4-6 June 2016, an intense East Coast Low (ECL) weather condition stretched along the entire NSW coast, bringing widespread rainfall, damaging winds and flash flooding to the Northern and Southern coastal regions, Sydney Northern Beaches and South West Metropolitan region. Damaging surf combined with king tides caused coastal erosion up and down the NSW coast.

Appointed as the State Recovery Coordinator, Dave Owens was charged to develop a report to describe the June 2016 East Coast Low in terms of impacts on affected communities and industries and the recovery activities that were subsequently undertaken. The report also needed to highlight a number of issues of interest and makes recommendations for improvements to better enable future recovery operations.

In the final report, a tailored recovery approach was adopted which saw variations outlined from region to region, dependent on local needs. Regional Recovery Committees were established on the North Coast and Illawarra South Coast. Local Recovery Committees were established to address the needs of affected communities in the Wollondilly LGA (Picton), the Northern Beaches and on the North Coast (Coffs Harbour).

It is these and other specialist analysis skills that Dave Owens and the team from Risk-e Business Consultants bring to the table.
