Menindee Mass Fish Death - From Beginning to End

Risk-e Business was originally engaged by the NSW Government’s Office of the Chief Scientist to assist with an independent review into the 2023 fish deaths on the Darling-Baaka River.

Risk-e Business was then engaged by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to work with them in the development of a mass fish death exercise that could be delivered in Menindee in 2024.

Risk-e has now again been engaged by the EPA to develop (with extensive consultation) the Menindee Mass Fish Death Sub Plan. In the development of this Sub Plan, it is important to acknowledge and recognise the impact that the condition of the Murray-Darling Basin has upon the Traditional Owners and their Nations, and their deep and profound connection to their lands and waters.

The ongoing trauma that mass fish deaths have upon the local community must be acknowledged, along with their desire for the protection of their Country. We respect the connectivity of the river, people, animals and plants and the deep impact upon the Barkandji people when one of these is disturbed.

It is through this extensive consultation that we will achieve an outcome. We look forward to our visit to Menindee later this month to listen to the locals about how they want to be communicated with before, during and after such an event.
